Founder and CEO
Steve Cokkinias is the Executive Director of Client Experience at FMG Leading, and Founder of InnSense Leadership, which he established in 2012 after a successful 17-year career in the hotel industry that included senior leadership positions with Ritz-Carlton, Westin, and Sheraton, in the U.S.A., Caribbean, and Asia.
An inspiring and sought-after coach and speaker, Steve has delivered energizing service, talent, and leadership programs to a wide range of international companies, including: Citibank, Mercedes Benz, Standard Chartered Bank, HSBC, Petronas, BMW, Prudential, Volvo, Toyota, Sime Darby, YTL, and NTUC Income (Singapore). His new book, “InnSanity – Leadership Lessons from a Lifetime in Luxury Lodging”, will be released in 2014.
Steve began his career in 1995 with Starwood Hotels & Resorts, rising into middle management in several cities in the USA, including a 2-year post at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida, prior to joining The Ritz-Carlton in April, 2000 in Montego Bay, Jamaica. In 2003, after just 3 years with the Ritz-Carlton brand, during which he held various senior leadership positions at 3 different properties, he became the youngest General Manager in Ritz-Carlton’s history when he took the helm as G.M. in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia at the age of 29.
During his 9-year tenure as General Manager in Kuala Lumpur, the hotel won numerous awards and accolades, including recognition as the “Best Business Hotel in Malaysia” by Business Asia & CNBC Asia, and a place on Conde Nast Traveler’s exclusive“Gold List”. Travel & Leisure featured the property on their “Top 20 World’s Best Values”, “Greatest Hotels in the World” and “T&L 500” lists. Expedia named the hotel amongst the world’s top 1% on its “Insider Select List”, and the Independent U.K. named the property one of the “Top 5 Butler Hotels in the World”.
Perhaps most notably, under Steve’s leadership, the hotel was named “Best Employer in Malaysia” four times consecutively by Hewitt & Associates during their bi-annual regional study, a feat which earned him a place on Human Capital Asia’s “Hot 40 – Asia’s H.R. Superstars”. In 2010, Steve was named Malaysia’s “General Manager of the Year” by the Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards. In addition to his contributions in Malaysia, Steve has assisted with the opening of 5 Ritz-Carlton properties worldwide, in the U.S.A., Caribbean, Middle East, and China.
Steve has served on the Board of Governors of the American-Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM), and the Steering Committee of the U.S. Embassy-based Overseas Security Advisory Committee (OSAC). A published author on the topics of leadership and service excellence, Steve’s writings are featured in his weekly column on EHotelier.com, the world’s largest online hospitality community, and in Malaysia’s newspaper, The New Straits Times, to which he contributes regularly.
Steve graduated from Washington and Lee University (USA) with a Bachelor of Arts in both History and Sociology. Although often travelling, Steve’s home is in Orlando, Florida, where he lives with his wife Mimie and their children.
